Student Staff

Our student staff members support all aspects of our work here in Student Engagement & Belonging. We do our best to make your job as rewarding and pleasant as possible. You will be called upon to perform a variety of tasks for the office and help you become familiar with the programs and services our office offers. We offer two types of student employment opportunities including student assistants and graduate assistants. Student assistants can be current undergraduate or graduate students. Graduate assistants are required to have a degree prior to appointment and have elevated levels of responsibility.

Student Assistants

What are the qualifications?

Education

  • Must be an enrolled degree-seeking student at 麻豆传媒
  • Have a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher

Federal Work-Study

  • Federal Work-Study can vary on each available position. Read the position descriptions associated to each opening. If you are not sure that you qualify for Federal Work-Study, please reach out to Financial Aid to discuss your eligibility.

Scheduling

  • Availability for up to 20 hours per week during office hours of operation
  • Availability must be from Monday-Friday (occasional evening/weekend hours may be needed for campus events)

Physical

  • Requires sustained seeing, hearing and sitting
  • Requires occasional carrying, feeling/touching, handling, holding, pulling, pushing, standing, stooping, bending and walking

What types of positions do you offer?

Front Desk Student Assistants

Student Assistants are the backbone of Student Engagement, Advocacy & Leadership operations. Students in this position are the first person many of our guests greet. The Student Assistant position provides quality customer service to guests, performs clerical duties, acts as a receptionist, and provides support to many of the Student Involvement programs and initiatives. 

Marketing Assistants

Our marketing assistants gain applied learning skills through the development of print and digital media. Designers use products like Adobe Suites, Pixlr, Canva and others to produce professional work that can be showcased in their portfolio. Additional opportunities involved photographing events, and creating and scheduling social media content.

Shocker Support Locker

Our student employees who work in the Shocker Support Locker provide front line service to reduce hunger within our Shocker community. Student assistants in this role stock and keep inventory, assist students in the check-out process, and provide friendly customer service.

Graduate Assistants

About our Assistantships

Assistantships are offered in a variety of functional areas and focus on programming, advising, and leadership development. Graduate students who serve in our office gain knowledge in planning, organizational leadership, confict resolution, teamwork, and enhance their inter and intra-personal communication skills through advising, promoting, and presentations. 

Campus Activities Graduate Assistant

Provides direct support in the planning of major campus events like Shockers After Dark, Shocktoberfest and supports the Student Activities Council in advising 1-2 student leaders. 

Civic Engagement Graduate Assistant

Provides support to the Community Service Board as an advisor to 1-2 student leaders and coordinates volunteer experiences for the campus community. 

Fraternity & Sorority Life Graduate Assistant

Provides support to the students in the Fraternity & Sorority Life Community through program creation and advising one of the four governing councils.

Leadership Programs Graduate Assistant

Assist in creating leadership centered curriculum, instructing our tiered leadership programs, and planning multi-day institutes.

Marketing Graduate Assistant

Provides marketing support and serves as the advisor to the Student Engagement Ambassadors.

Student Advocacy Graduate Assistant

Manages the operations of the Shocker Support Locker including maintenance of the check-out system, intentory of food & supplies, and supervision of student employees.

General Duties

The following duties are a broad reflection of all the positions offered within Student Engagement. 

  • Plan, market, and execute events, programs, or activities specific to the position
  • Develop and maintain program budgets
  • Advise, lead and/or supervise students in positions of leadership
  • Assess and track data related to the success of that program and/or area
  • Represent the department on committees and external assignments
  • Perform other duties and functions of Student Engagement as assigned
Academic Requirements
  • The GA must be admitted to, enroll, and maintain enrollment during the term of the appointment in the Master of Educational Psychology program, Master of Social Work program, or another Master鈥檚 Program in the fields of education, health science, public administration, sociology or sports administration.
  • The GA is expected to demonstrate positive academic progress by receiving a semester GPA of 3.0 or greater as well as maintaining a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or greater while enrolled in the academic program.
  • The GA must be enrolled in at least 6 graduate credit hours and be making academic progress toward graduation. At least 3 credits per semester must be taken in person and on campus. The GA may not fall below 6 credits in any given semester or carry more than 9 credit hours per semester without approval from the Director.
Terms of Appointment & Important Dates
  • GA's receive a stipend position in exchange for 20 hours per week in any week classes are in session
  • Positions require some weekend and night hours
  • Positions will begin in August 2024 and will end no later than May 2025 with the option for renewal
  • The GA must be in good conduct standing with the University during the course of employment
Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Awarded a Bachelor鈥檚 Degree
  • Must be a graduate student at Wichita State Univest State University and enrolled in at least 6 credit hours
  • Must be available to work evening and weekend hours
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Strong attention to detail and organization
  • Working knowledge of marketing and social media for event promotion
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of people
  • Perform in an ethical and professional manner
  • Must possess a valid driver鈥檚 license

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in area of interest
  • Experience and interest in student development
  • Ability to relate and work well with students
  • Ability to provide guidance and support and inspire others to action
Compensation

Compensation will include the following:

  • Stipend of $5,500 per semester
  • In-state tuition waiver, covering up to 18 credit hours for the academic year (does not cover student segregated fees)
  • Health Insurance (Optional)
  • Professional Development Funding
  • 10% discount on textbooks in the Shocker Store
