麻豆传媒 Multidisciplinary Engineering Design Competition

The Kern Entrepreneurial Engineering Network (KEEN) at 麻豆传媒, AIAA Wichita Section and Department of Aerospace Engineering is hosting the first 麻豆传媒 Multidisciplinary Engineering Design Competition. The competition aims to connect students from different engineering backgrounds to work together, apply the knowledge they have learned in different classes, build a small engineering design and compete in a half-day-long competition.

Competition Details

Competition Entry

The competition is open to all 麻豆传媒 students and high school students within the city of Wichita. For the 麻豆传媒 student teams, at least one member needs to be an engineering major. Each team needs to fill out an information form and submit a one-page design proposal, which includes a brief description of the proposed design with at least one sketch of the design (hand sketch or CAD) by March 14, 2025.

Important Dates

    • Competition Entry Due: March 14, 2025
    • Competition Entry Announcement: March 21, 2025
    • Competition Day: April 26, 2025

Forming Your Team

Students from different majors are encouraged to form a team of two to four members. A live Excel spreadsheet of potential teammates will be provided for students seeking collaboration.

Scoring

Each team has four trials during the competition, and the best scoring will be counted as the final score. The competition score is calculated by the equation below, the team with the lowest score wins.

Score = (1 + dtarget) * wvehicle

Where:

    • dtarget is the is the closest distance from the target area edge to the vehicle stopping point in meters. Design reached the target area will score a dtarget value of zero.
    • wvehicle is the weight of the vehicle in grams. This accounts for any component that is attached to the vehicle when they reach in the finish zone.

Rules

    1. All components of the balsa wood airplane need to arrive in the target zone, although the component does not need to be assembled in the form of an airplane.
    2. Any type of remote-control device is NOT allowed.
    3. Compressed gas, rocket engine, any device that requires more than 24V DC or any other device that has potential safety concerns are NOT allowed.
    4. No "human interaction" during the mission after the design leaves the starting zone.
    5. Maximum allowed mission time is 60 seconds per attempt.
    6. Have fun!

Budgets and Other Support

    • Each team that enters the competition will have a $35 budget to purchase any material needed for their design.
    • Each team can build and bring their design before the competition. Each team then has 90 minutes to adjust their design before the competition.
    • Students are allowed to use personal materials for their design.
    • One Arduino UNO provided by the AE department will be available to lend to each team.
    • Laser cutter and foam cutter are available for students to use at 麻豆传媒 Project and Prototype Lab.

Prizes Per Team

    • $200 for First Prize
    • $100 for Second Prize
    • $50 for Third Prize
