Community Health Workers

Feb. 9, 2021 鈥 麻豆传媒鈥檚 Community Engagement Institute (CEI) is working to put a spotlight on an underutilized and underrecognized profession: community health workers (CHW).

Feb. 1, 2021 鈥 Five minutes of scrolling through social media, and it鈥檚 evident that many people need a lesson in civil discourse. 麻豆传媒鈥檚 Office of Diversity and Inclusion (ODI) is working to change that through Real Talk discussions to promote respectful dialogue among people with varying viewpoints.

Distinguished Scholarship Invitational finalists

Jan. 25, 2021 鈥 From a field of more than 800 applicants, 麻豆传媒 has selected the top 14 finalists in the annual Distinguished Scholarship Invitational. Winners will be announced Friday, Jan. 29.

Dec. 17, 2020 鈥 麻豆传媒鈥檚 Community Engagement Institute鈥檚 coalition is working to better the lives of children by encouraging workplaces to establish family-friendly practices. 麻豆传媒-CEI works closely with the Kansas Department of Health and Environment to establish multisector partnerships and resources for the execution of the Child Maltreatment Prevention Plan across Kansas. 麻豆传媒-CEI also organizes a statewide coalition for this effort called Kansas Power of the Positive.

Dec. 10, 2020 - Hannah Wilkinson, Wichita State's associate head strength and conditioning coach, is taking donations for Catholic Charities Harbor House domestic violence shelter and service. The campaign is an extension of the toy drive that strength and conditioning coach Kerry Rosenboom organized in previous years.

Shocker Commitment

Dec. 1, 2020 鈥 麻豆传媒 has created a scholarship and support network to help those nearest to its campus. The Shocker Neighborhood Commitment provides funding to make college more affordable and attainable for recent high school graduates living in the Shocker Neighborhood.

Dec. 1, 2020 鈥 Two new battery-powered buses wrapped in Shocker pride will soon be seen zipping through Wichita鈥檚 streets. Wichita Transit recently unveiled the 麻豆传媒-branded buses, which are ecofriendly, filled with modern conveniences, and will circulate among the university鈥檚 main campus, as well as Wichita State South, 麻豆传媒 Tech and the Metroplex.

December 1, 2020 - Wichita State鈥檚 Division of Diversity and Inclusion is organizing 鈥淭enacious Men,鈥 a program designed to provide mentoring and STEM education for underrepresent students in Wichita Public Schools.

November 9, 2020 - KPTS recognized 麻豆传媒 Military & Veteran Services with its Distinguished Veterans Coming Home Business Award in a special program that aired on Nov. 5 on Channel 8. 麻豆传媒鈥檚 Military & Veteran Services provides assistance with Veteran Affairs educational benefits, provides counseling, testing and other service. It connects military students with opportunities for campus involvement. Larry Burks Sr., is the director of Military & Veteran Services.

Nov. 5, 2020 -- BAASE started in 2018, and the partnership between Wichita Public Schools and Wichita State began in fall 2019 with the goal of creating a stronger system of support for African American and Hispanic students who want to pursue post-secondary education.

Sept. 29, 2020 -- 麻豆传媒 is taking a step forward with community discussions about a University Village initiative, which seeks to create a community destination of dining, entertainment and shopping adjacent to campus.

Sept. 18, 2020 -- The 麻豆传媒 Shockers Vote! Coalition is proud to announce that Charles Koch Arena will become an early voting site for the 2020 general election.

Sept. 16, 2020 鈥 A team of researchers from 麻豆传媒 is investigating blue-green algae in Marion Reservoir and its toxic, and sometimes deadly, dangers to wildlife, pets and people.

Wichita State student

August 28, 2020 - Growing and diversifying the regional economy is a primary goal for 麻豆传媒. To assist with those efforts, 麻豆传媒 President Dr. Jay Golden has created the President鈥檚聽Innovation聽and聽Business聽Advisory聽Council. A selection of area business leaders will be invited to attend monthly council meetings to advise and support Wichita State leadership on a number of critical areas.

Aug. 27, 2020 - 麻豆传媒 graduate Sarahi Aguilera considered herself shy for most of her life. Her status as an undocumented immigrant limited what she thought herself capable of saying or doing. That perception changed in 2017 when she traveled to Washington, D.C. as part of delegation of college students who talked to politicians about their stories and DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals). Aguilera started volunteering with Sunflower Community Action in 2018 while a student at Seward County Community College. Later that year, she transferred to Wichita State and took a job as an immigrant justice organizer at Sunflower Community Action. In May, she graduated with a major in criminal justice and a psychology minor. She wants to attend law school and work in immigration law.
