JULY 2024

Congratulations to those who received awards in June!  The tentative numbers for 麻豆传媒 researchers under Academic Affairs for FY2024 are $85,630,496 in submitted proposals and $87,394,476 in awards received.

A special congratulations also to Drs. Jan Twomey, Linnea GlenMaye, Rhonda Lewis, Moriah Beck, David Eichhorn and Tiffany Franks for their successful proposal and receipt of a $1 million grant award to 麻豆传媒 under the National Science Foundation鈥檚 ADVANCE program.  The NSF ADVANCE Adaptation award directly addresses barriers to the representation and advancement of women and minority STEM faculty at 麻豆传媒, such as recruitment and hiring practices.  The team will establish an office for faculty excellence in research and teaching.  This office will offer opportunities for mutual mentoring around faculty-selected topics as well as workshops and seminars around new teaching methods and developing a strong research program.

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Twomey and the team on this incredible achievement.

Funding Agency: Department of Energy (DOE): Advanced Research Projects Agency Energy (ARPA-E)

Title:

Application Deadlines: Concept Papers due August 13, 2024; Full Proposals to be due at a date TBD

Purpose: 鈥淭he program aims to lower nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from the cultivation of corn and sorghum used for United States ethanol production by 50%. The program will emphasize plant and microbial bio-design strategies that lower the application of synthetic nitrogen (N) fertilizer on corn and sorghum fields while maintaining crop yields and reducing 50% of N2O emissions. Lowering the requirements of synthetic N fertilizer will also lower costs to farmers, as the cost of fertilizer is a significant portion of the operating expenses of a farm. This program will enable technologies to reduce N fertilizer consumption and N2O emissions. These technologies will transform agriculture and lower the N2O contribution to the carbon intensity of ethanol produced today for light duty vehicles and in the future for sustainable aviation fuel.鈥

Amount: Individual awards may vary between $1 million and $10 million in Federal share. Most awards are anticipated to vary between $4 million and $6 million.

Title: Solicitation for Program Evaluation of the Federal Byrne State Crisis Intervention Program (SCIP) Grant

Application Deadline: August 15, 2024

Purpose: 鈥淭he purpose of the SCIP evaluator is to assess the impact recipients of SCIP funds are having on the gun violence and violent crime rates in Kansas. The Program Evaluator will learn about the strategies and corresponding goals and objectives of the programs receiving SCIP grant funds for the SCIP Plan Priorities. The Program Evaluator will assess a minimum of 12 months of SCIP Subgrantee data, with a preference for 18 months of data. By generating more knowledge about strategies used to address reduction in gun violence and violent crime, communities that benefit from SCIP funding will be better equipped to align their work with practices that are known to be effective and promising. The SCIP evaluation component is designed to support a broad range of evaluation methods, including data review. A strong evidence-based evaluation would help Kansas use federal funds more effectively and assist the SCIP Advisory Board in setting annual SCIP funding priorities.鈥 Email proposals@wichita.edu for a copy of the solicitation.

National Institutes of Health (NIH): Harnessing AI to Explore Health Restoration in Diabetes: July 29, 2024

A promising area of medical research is the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to analyze large sets of data in order to gain better understanding of the development of disease (pathogenesis) and the restoration of health (salutogenesis). Dr. Aaron Lee is co-principal investigator on the AI-READI project, funded through the NIH Common Fund鈥檚 Bridge to Artificial Intelligence program. AI-READI is generating high-quality, multimodal, and ethically sourced data that will be ready for AI/ML methods to study salutogenesis in the context of type 2 diabetes. Dr. Lee will also discuss researching the health of the whole person, not just separate organs or body systems, and AI/ML advances from ophthalmology.鈥

NIHCM Foundation Webinar: Meeting the Health Care Needs of an Aging Population: August 7, 2024

鈥淏y 2032, Medicare spending is projected to reach $1.9 trillion, largely due to growth in the Medicare population and increases in health care costs. As society ages, the demand for health care services intensifies, exacerbating shortages of health care workers, particularly in long-term care facilities. Caregivers also play a crucial role in supporting the health and well-being of older adults, while facing the substantial health and economic implications of providing care. Additionally, older adults often experience health disparities from unequal access to services, which lead to poorer health outcomes. These challenges underscore the urgent need to make health care more affordable and accessible for older adults.鈥

EPA Releases Value of Information (VOI) Case Study on ETAP

鈥淓PA conducted a VOI analysis to weigh the public health and economic trade-offs associated with the timeliness, uncertainty, and costs of conducting the EPA Transcriptomics Assessment Product (ETAP) compared to traditional human health assessment processes. Fewer than a quarter of the tens of thousands of chemicals in commerce--as well as those found in the environment, various waste streams, and the human body--have traditional toxicity or epidemiological data that can inform human health risk assessments. ETAP is a novel human health assessment approach aiming to address this challenge by targeting chemicals that lack traditional toxicity testing data.鈥
