Discover Wichita's Aviation Heritage

Wichita is proudly the Air Capital of the World, and the Kansas Aviation Museum is the ultimate example of this rich heritage. The museum fills the historic Wichita Municipal Airport Terminal Building, an art-deco treasure constructed during the 1930s with its control tower finished in 1941. Standing in the atrium where legends like Fred Astaire used to stand while waiting for flights, or going up to the tower to glimpse panoramic views of Wichita, roots visitors in an important era in aviation history.

The museum contains an impressive collection of over a dozen civilian and military aircraft displayed on the outdoor ramp. Mentioned are the Boeing B-52D Stratofortress, a monstrous bomber that has a 185-foot wingspan, and the Boeing KC-135E Stratotanker, an important air refueling aircraft. Personal aircraft such as a Cessna Citation, a Beechcraft Queen Air, and a Learjet Model 23 formerly owned by Bill Lear also illustrate the diversity in the form and function of flight.

Within, the museum displays six full-scale aircraft and a collection of exhibits that trace the histories of local aircraft manufacturers, with special areas on Beechcraft and Cessna. Special exhibits such as the Rip Gooch Black Aviators Exhibit and Women of Aviation showcase the contributions made by diverse groups to the industry

Hands-On, Interactive Experiences

One of the best things about the museum is its interactive exhibits. The flight simulators allow you to experience what it feels like to pilot an airplane, and it is an excellent and learning experience for all. The piston engine model of work also allows you to get up close and personal with how internal combustion engines operate, solidifying engineering concepts in a fun way.
