Care was taken to ensure the selected classes included all applicable subjects and a representative variety of times/days. The following is a list of the courses and their respective schedules: MATH 011 12:30 1:20 Daily MATH 123 11:00 12:15 TR MATH 012 8:30 1:20 Daily MATH 144 7:05 8:20 TR MATH 111 7:30 8:20 MWF MATH 242 11:30 12:20 Daily MATH 111 10:30 11:20 MWF MATH 242 1:30 2:55 MWF MATH 112 9:30 10:20 Daily STAT 370 5:35 6:50 TR The survey consisted of the following questions (see attached survey for more details): Approximately how often do you make use of the Math Lab? On a scale of 1 to 5, with 1 being Poor and 5 being Excellent, how would you rate the assistance you have received in the Math Lab? Do you have any suggestions for how the Math Lab could be improved? If you do not use the Math Lab, why not? Are there changes that could be made that would make you more inclined to use the Lab? There were a total of 150 surveys collected. The surveys shows that about 40% of students, in the classes above, use the Math Lab on an average of 2-3 times a week. Students Perceptions of Quality of Help Received The 26 students who stated that they rarely attended asked for more tutors in general, more tutors who are skilled in statistics, and better hours of operation. They rated the help they received as follows: Poor4%Fair8%Average28%Good32%Excellent28% Most students who claimed to use the Math Lab about 1 or 2 times per week had no suggestions but two students did say they would like to see more tutors and one said more computers. This category of students rated the help they received as follows: Average8%Good59%Excellent33% The students who used the Math Lab 3 or 4 times a week had any suggestions. Some students suggested a bigger room because it gets crowded. The ratings from this group were very favorable: Good20%Excellent80% Of the students surveyed that said they used the Lab on a daily basis, included being greeted personally upon entrance and having extended hours. Their ratings were as follows: Poor20%Good60%Excellent20% The ratings for students that used the Lab primarily for test-taking are: Average62%Good13%Excellent25% Suggestions for Improvement The results of the Math Lab Survey were reviewed by the chair, undergraduate coordinator, and the Math Lab Director. Overall, the students who use the Math Lab gave favorable responses about the help they received. Their most common suggestions for improvement to the Math Lab have been compiled into the following list: Advertise the Math Lab more. Make sure that tutors/instructors who are proficient in statistics are available. Hire more tutors and/or enlist the volunteer help of more GTAs and instructors. Consider having later hours a few nights a week. Be cautious during peak test times that the Math Lab doesnt get overcrowded. The most common reason given by those who do not use the Lab was a lack of time. Others said they preferred to work on their own. A few students stated that they were unaware of the Labs existence. Still others criticized the lack of tutors who could help with statistics. In order to draw in more of this group of students, the following steps will be taken: Advertise the Math Lab more.
