This goal states, Students will learn a broad range of geologic knowledge and the ability to apply it on an integrated basis. As required by the Student Outcome Assessment plan, a passing grade in Field Geology is indication that the BS student has gained mastery in the geosciences. Our students performed well above this marker, with an average grade of A-. Eight students completed this course, a fair representative sample of the yearly average of graduating seniors per year (mean 6.2/year). Again as proscribed in the Student Assessment Outcome Assessment plan, we will review and evaluate using the same standard of proficiency in the next academic year. Should there be a significant number of BA Geology majors in the 2010-11 academic year, we will include data from other capstone courses as outlined in the Student Outcome Assessment plan. Goal #2: Goal #2 states, students will be presented with and learn the geologic knowledge and research skills to prepare them for careers in industry, government, or academic pursuits. This goal, according to the Student Outcome Assessment plan, is to be evaluated on a rotating 3-year basis using standards recommended by the American Geological Institute, the American Association of Petroleum Geologists and a subgroup of the 鶹ý GeoAdvisory organization. The academic year 2009-2010 was not a target year for this evaluation. Goal #2 is also to be evaluated by tracking state licensure of students. Within the past year, the Kansas State Board of Technical Professions awarded 2 former students the Fundamentals of Geology Examination and 1 former student the Practice of Geology Examination. In addition, 6 former 鶹ý Geology undergraduate students enrolled in a Masters program during the academic year 2009-10. Our graduated seniors appear to be well prepared for careers in industry, government, and graduate education. Goal #3: Goal #3 states, students will be encouraged to participate in research projects and their presentation in conjunction with faculty and other students. This goal, again according to the Student Outcome Assessment plan, should be evaluated by tracking undergraduate involvement in internal and external research, presentations, publications, grants, and awards. Our undergraduates (not including incoming Freshmen) received the following scholarships and awards: Donald and Gwendolyn Hellar Endowed Geology Scholarship, Donald A. Philips Award for Excellence in Mineralogy, Tasch Endowment, Wichita Gem and Mineral Society Scholarship, the E. K. Edmiston Endowed Scholarship in Geology, Charles Mayfield Scholarship, the James and Mary Loise Tasheff Endowed Scholarship in Geology, and the Arthur Gibson Memorial Endowed Scholarship. Throughout the year, eight undergraduate students worked directly with tenured faculty on various research projects. In addition, one of our undergraduate students won First Place in the 10th Annual 鶹ý Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity Forum poster division. In the next academic year, we will continue to work with our undergraduate students to involve them in faculty research projects and support their efforts to present and publish their own work where applicable.
