We measured performance in the following four categories on the final paper of the semester: research, writing, argumentation, and using sources. GTAs Fails Meets Exceeds Research 10% 41% 49% Writing 16% 59% 25% Argumentation 8% 44% 48% Using Sources 14% 50% 36% Lecturers Fails Meets Exceeds Research 10% 42% 48% Writing 16% 63% 21% Argumentation 6% 51% 43% Using Sources 10% 52% 38% Faculty (no faculty members turned in statistics) Concurrent EnrollmentTeachers (no concurrent enrollment teachers turned in statistics) Recommendations: It appears both GTAs and lecturers graded similarly this spring. This had not been the case last spring. While we do grading practice in syllabus group for the GTAs, there is no required grade norming practice for lecturers. However, almost all of our current lecturers are former GTAs, so perhaps their previous practice keeps them consistent both with each other and with the newly trained GTAs. Based on these findings, I think we should continue on our current course of grade norming practice. I was pleased to see an increase in the overall percentage of students who exceeded expectations. Last fall only 25.75% of students scored in the exceeds expectations category, but this spring 38% scored in the exceeds expectations category. Im not sure why there was an increase this spring. Several things could have impacted that category: increased GTA and lecturer comfort with the demanding text, more emphasis on both critical thinking and documentation, better prepared students, etc. Whatever the cause, it was good to see that there were similarities between the GTAs and lecturers in this area as well.
