IRB announces revised application process

The revised 鈥淐ommon Rule鈥 for the protection of human subjects went into effect on Jan. 21, 2019.  As a result of this, we have revised our application process.  There is now only one New Study Application that will need to be submitted.  It can be found on the IRB website. Please make note of this and begin using the new form.

Providing more scholarships for 麻豆传媒 students with financial need and funding faculty initiatives are among the highest priorities at Wichita State. That鈥檚 why I鈥檓 excited to learn the 麻豆传媒 Foundation will focus its fundraising efforts in the next 20 months on these two goals. They will be front and center for the final phase of the Shock the World Campaign.

We must invest in faculty in three primary ways. First, enhance salaries to make sure we don鈥檛 lose high-achieving educators to other institutions. Second, fund research that adds value to our community. And, third, give faculty the resources they need to direct student research and develop other applied learning opportunities for students. Through the Shock the World Campaign, it is my hope that every discipline at Wichita State has additional funds to support faculty, the backbone of our university.

More scholarship aid for students with financial limitations also is essential. As a public university, Wichita State鈥檚 most fundamental mission is to reduce barriers for those who desire higher education. Need-based scholarships open doors for those who can鈥檛 otherwise become Shockers. Our mission also focuses on creating a pipeline of talent to employers to help accelerate economic growth. Providing educational opportunity for those who can鈥檛 afford it will help accomplish this goal, while improving the economic trajectory for these students and their families. With first-generation students representing more than 40 percent of 麻豆传媒鈥檚 enrollment, the need for more scholarships is urgent.

Shocker Nation has been exceptionally generous in giving to the Shock the World Campaign. In just the first five years of the campaign, contributions have increased scholarship awards by 50 percent. Please consider supporting our faculty and students during the final phase of the campaign.

 

What鈥檚 that huge metal egg-shaped thing by the Food Truck Plaza?

Anyone who has been east of the Food Truck Plaza on campus has probably seen a large, slightly egg-shaped structure being installed. That is what鈥檚 known as a pod, and it鈥檚 part of the new place-making initiative at Wichita State inviting students, employees and community members to 鈥渓inger longer鈥 on campus.


Shared Governance Discussion Groups scheduled on Feb. 5 and 7

Shared Governance Discussion Groups

During the town hall meeting in September, the university gathered feedback on four strategic priority areas.  Priority #1 is to advance a culture of shared governance built on trust and integrity. 

The university will hold discussion groups to bring faculty, staff, administration, and students together to discuss how we all can make an impact through shared governance.  This will be a guided discussion to share with each other, learn from one another, and generate thoughts about shared governance at the university.

The discussion group will go through a process to:

  • Identify the current perception of shared governance at the university.
  • Identify how faculty, staff, and administration participate in shared governance.
  • Identify who you think makes decisions, who is consulted, and who must approve decisions that are made.
  • Vision what shared governance could be at the university.

There will be discussion groups scheduled at varying times as shown below.

We will consolidate the input from each discussion group, identify consistent themes, and recommend a plan that will be shared at open forums to ensure that it accurately reflects the input from the discussion groups and to provide an opportunity for feedback.


Attention faculty! Sign-up now for CourseLeaf Curriculum (CIM) training

CourseLeaf Curriculum (CIM) is the new online curriculum change system replacing the current paper curriculum change forms. It is the complementary system to our existing online catalog (CAT).

麻豆传媒鈥檚 CIM go-live kicks off with training for faculty and staff involved in the curriculum change process, submitting and approving curriculum change forms, etc.

Two levels of training will be offered in various sessions Wednesday and Thursday, Feb. 6-7. Go to myTraining on the Faculty / Staff tab in my麻豆传媒 to review the details of each session and register for the one applicable to your role in the curriculum change process.


Duo Security Software demonstration for Administrative Processes and Procedures

麻豆传媒 is required to deploy Duo two-factor authentication security to all faculty and staff. Duo adds a second layer of security to your 麻豆传媒 login account. Duo enhances security by requiring the use of a secondary device at login to verify your identity, which will ensure that others cannot access your account by obtaining your password. Information Technology Services is providing training on Duo Security on the following dates:

  • 2-3 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5, in 211 Hubbard Hall
  • 2:30-3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb 6, 142 RSC (limited space)

You can enroll in these sessions through my Training located on the my麻豆传媒 portal; under faculty/Staff tab. The name of the training session is 鈥淒uo Security Software Demonstration.鈥

The Office of Research Compliance Workshop: University Export Compliance 101 will be held from noon-1:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8, in 405 Jardine Hall. The presenter will be Becky Hundley, MBA Director of Research Compliance. 

U.S. export laws apply to higher education and you have personal liability. The Research Compliance Office is here to serve as a resource and provide training to protect not only the university, but help you, as an individual, be better informed and avoid export violations.

The 麻豆传媒 Graduate Student of the Year scholarship competition is a competitive and prestigious opportunity for graduate students who have proven exemplary leadership, involvement, and service both to the 麻豆传媒 and Wichita communities. Round 1: Application Review 鈥 Completed by Thursday, Feb. 14

  • This process would be going through the qualified applicants and meeting to decide on which students move onto the next round.

Round 2: Interviews / Presentations 鈥 Friday, Feb. 22

  • Our judges panel will sit through a series of interviews which include a presentation of those selected to move on from the application round. Deliberation and decision on the final court of five students will follow the interviews.

Managing Classroom discussion training available

Graduate Studies will offer a Managing Classroom discussion and lunch from noon-1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13, in 142 RSC. The presenter will be John Jones from the Media Resources Center.

One of the most effective teaching techniques we have at our disposal is discussion. In this training we will talk about managing discussion 鈥 how to draw out students, establish a safe space for students to explore ideas, and how to keep control without stifling student voices.

Effective time and priority management is a skill everyone needs

Are your students missing assignments, classes and appointments, but you see their frequent posts on social media? Managing priorities, juggling multiple life roles, and trying to meet all academic deadlines can become overwhelming for many of our students. They can find resources such as our one page semester planner and tips such as putting assignments, exams and reminders in their calendars on the Student Success time management website.


Graduate student seeking participants for coping with depression research project

A 麻豆传媒 graduate student working on her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology is seeking volunteers to participate in a project that compares two approaches for coping with depression. This study will be conducted within the Department of Psychology (Jabara Hall) under the supervision of Robert Zettle, and will require your involvement for 18- 20 weeks. The study involves eight weekly treatment sessions.

The first two weeks involve one hour sessions and the remaining six sessions will be half-hour sessions. Participants who complete all sessions will be contacted one week and two months later for follow-up measures.

Participants must be at least 18 and will be screened in three stages to determine their eligibility. 

If you are interested, complete an  (30 minutes) to assess your initial eligibility.  The next two stages will be conducted in person for 20 and 50 minutes respectively.

Seeking participants for a paid study

Computer users, 18 or older, are sought to participate in a research study investigating the effects of computer monitor resolution on user performance and experience. Do you digitally create / edit illustrations, photos, textures or animation?

The study will take place in McKinley Hall, and last about 90 minutes. Participants will earn $25 or six SONA credits if enrolled in a 麻豆传媒 psychology course.
