Students took a lead role in Dockum lunch counter sit-in in summer of 1958
The Dockum Drug Store sit-in of 1958 is attracting new attention during Black History Month, in part thanks to NBC鈥檚 鈥淭oday鈥� and Wichita native Sheinelle Jones.
Several University of Wichita students participated in the sit-in, which is increasingly recognized as a landmark event in the Civil Rights Movement. NBC鈥檚 鈥淭oday鈥� featured the events in a recent broadcast.
鈥淭hey couldn鈥檛 sit in there to eat or drink,鈥� said Dr. March茅 Fleming-Randle, vice president and chief diversity office for 麻豆传媒鈥檚 Military, Veterans and First Responders. 鈥淭hey were the first, and that鈥檚 the most important piece for us to remember.鈥�

Today in Black History...
On Feb. 10, 1964, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was passed. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex or national origin. Provisions of this Civil Rights Cct forbade discrimination on the basis of sex, as well as, race in hiring, promoting and firing. The act prohibited discrimination in public accommodations and federally funded programs. It also strengthened the enforcement of voting rights and the desegregation of schools.
The Civil Rights Act of 1964 is the nation's benchmark civil rights legislation, and it continues to resonate in America. Passage of the act ended the application of "Jim Crow" laws, which had been upheld by the Supreme Court in the 1896 case Plessy v. Ferguson, in which the court held that racial segregation purported to be "separate but equal" was constitutional.

One year later: Student Wellness Center proves critical in providing essential campus
services
When the new 麻豆传媒 Student Wellness Center opened on campus a year ago in January, Student Health Services (SHS) and Counseling and Prevention Services (CAPS) staff couldn鈥檛 have known how important having a bigger and improved facility would be for providing essential physical and mental health services in the midst of a pandemic.

Spring OAT deadline is Feb. 12
The Open / Alternative Textbook (OAT) initiative is designed to promote, incentivize, and grow the use of freely available resources in 麻豆传媒 classes to reduce the economic impact of textbook costs for students.
Faculty who design courses that provide instructional resources at no cost to students are eligible for an OAT course designation. Students pay a flat $10 course fee, with these funds being split between the department offering the course and the Open / Alternative Textbook grant program (which funds faculty to develop more OAT courses/materials).

Accepting proposals and abstracts for virtual Diverse Women鈥檚 Summit
Individual students, groups and community members are invited to submit abstracts and proposals to present papers, posters, art works, dialogues, skits and other projects at the Diverse Women鈥檚 Summit. The summit will be by Zoom on March 8. The proposal should be 100-200 words describing the presentation (type, subject, theme and purpose).
Presentations that focus on the following topics will be given priority:
- Research on issues of covid-19 and special populations
- Citizenship and COVID-19
- Gender-based violence
- The future

Ulrich Museum's Faculty Biennial talks kick off with ADCI's Megan Ewert and Tanna

Celebrate the 23rd Faculty Biennial exhibition, currently on display at the Ulrich Museum of Art on the 麻豆传媒 campus, with Department of Art, Design and Creative Industries faculty as they pair up to talk about their process. The first in this series of virtual talks takes place at 10 a.m. today (Wednesday, Feb. 10), and features Megan Ewert, administrative assistant and adjunct instructor, and Tanna Burchinal, art studio manager. Celebrate Lunar New Year at Wichita State
The Lunar New Year is a celebration that starts with the first new moon of the lunisolar calendar and continues until the first full moon. For many Asian cultures, Lunar New Year is a celebration of change, a moment to renew oneself and a time to welcome in the coming year with family and friends. This year鈥檚 celebration will start on Feb. 12 and is considered the Year of the Ox. Join Ambassadors for Diversity and Inclusion and the Office of Diversity and Inclusion for an upcoming virtual panel discussion with individuals who celebrate this tradition. Hippodrome is Wichita State's longest-standing tradition and showcases student talent in a variety of ways. This year, Hippodrome is a video competition. This includes 5-10 minute productions written, choreographed and acted out by 麻豆传媒 students.
Performances are judged, and cash prizes are given out in the two categories of Live Action and Animation. To bring the show together, student emcee's charm the audience and introduce video productions throughout the nights. Performance nights are Wednesday, April 7 and Thursday, April 8.

While advised and supported by the Wichita State Graduate School and Student Affairs, the GSC is entirely student-run and student-driven. For this reason, it represents a valuable opportunity for graduate students to influence the 麻豆传媒 campus and community.
