Honored to tell their story: How journalists remember their work on 1970 麻豆传媒 plane crash coverage

The annual ceremony of remembrance for those who died in the 1970 麻豆传媒 plane crash will be held at 9 a.m. today (Wednesday, Oct. 2) at 麻豆传媒鈥檚 Memorial '70, located near the 18th Street and Hillside entrance to the university.

Mike Kennedy remembers when the paper bearing the Associated Press bulletin came over the wire in KMUW radio newsroom on that October day in 1970.

A plane carrying the 麻豆传媒 football team had crashed. The Associated Press, Kennedy recalls, embargoed the story until reporters learned more details. Early reporting varied between all surviving and none surviving.

Two planes carried the team, but which crashed?

鈥淭here was such a sense of shock and disbelief,鈥� he said. 鈥淚 really think we were some of the first people in Wichita to know about it. We started dividing up assignments. We knew there were two planes. They sent me over to the administration building to see if it was possible to find out which plane it was.鈥�

Save the date! The 20th annual Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity Forum (URCAF) will be held on Friday, April 10, 2020, in the Rhatigan Student Center. The forum provides an excellent opportunity for undergraduate students at Wichita State to present their scholarly and creative activity to a faculty, student, and community audience, while competing for cash awards.

Finding hope and healing: How one 麻豆传媒 student is beating the odds

Jennifer Raymo, a Wichita State student earning her graduate degree in social work, recently became the Wichita Chapter director of The Healing Chair. The nonprofit is a Kansas City based organization aimed at helping breast cancer and mastectomy survivors find comfort, hope and healing.

University Libraries will hold two Savvy Researcher workshops today (Wednesday, Oct. 2) and Friday, Oct. 4.

The first workshop, 鈥淎voiding Plagiarism," will be from 4-5 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 2, in 217 Ablah Library. Learn to identify unintentional plagiarism and identify strategies to avoid plagiarism. Co-taught with the Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards. 

The second workshop, 鈥淐omparing Citation Management Software," will be from noon-1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4 in 217 Ablah Library. Save time and get better results in your research using techniques like proximity searching, setting filters and limits, and using thesauri and wildcards.

The 麻豆传媒 Weekly Briefing will begin at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 3, in the Marcus Welcome Center. The featured speaker will be Dennis Livesay, dean of the College of Engineering.

Building dedication in honor of Dr. Bardo at Sip & See 2019

Come "Sip and See" Wichita State's newly renamed John Bardo Center on the Innovation Campus during Open House Weekend!

The building, formerly named the Experiential Engineering Building, will be rededicated at 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4, in Dr. Bardo's honor. Speaking at the dedication will be Sen. Jerry Moran and Interim President Andy Tompkins.

In search of male practice players for the Wichita State Women's Basketball team

Public opinions sought on Prison Food Survey

You are invited to participate in a study of perceptions of food quality in correctional facilities. The intended purpose of this research is to collect public opinions regarding the quality of food in correctional institutions and what personal factors (demographics, punitive attitudes, emotional empathy, media consumption, etc.) contribute to one's perceptions and ideals of food quality.

You will be asked to complete an online survey about your experiences and beliefs about food provided in correctional facilities. The results of this study will serve to inform stakeholders in the criminal justice system if changes to current policy and/or practice are needed.

Make a difference as a Prevention Ambassador

The Prevention Services Advisory Board (PSAB) is currently recruiting students to become Prevention Ambassadors. They will assist the PSAB in our mission as it aligns with the #麻豆传媒WeSupportU prevention program that focuses on promoting mental health and wellness and preventing suicide, sexual violence and substance abuse. This position qualifies for a zero-credit internship, and will provide the opportunity to engage with the 麻豆传媒 community.

Garba Night 2019 on Oct. 5 in RSC Shirley Beggs Ballroom

Flashes of vivid colors, sounds of wooden sticks hitting each other rhythmically, laughter, dancers whirling around keeping pace with the energetic music, this is what you will experience.

AHINSA brings you 鈥淕arba Night,鈥� an interactive, participatory Indian folk dance festival. The event is free, all are welcome and no experience is needed. Introductory lessons will be provided.

What is Garba? Garba or Dandiya Raas (with sticks), is a fun, high-energy folk dance for both men and women that originated in the state of Gujarat, India. This event will have a DJ playing traditional music with a Bollywood (modern) twist 鈥� strong, rhythmic beats gradually increasing in pace and intensity, challenging us to dance.

Trunk or Treat is a family-orientated event welcoming Shockers of all ages to campus for a safe alternative to traditional trick-or-treating. Student Activities Council wants your department or student organization to host a trunk!
