Weekly briefing update: Dean Rodney Miller shares importance of infrastructure initiative to the College of Fine Arts

Rodney Miller

The College of Fine Arts is located in two of the most iconic buildings at Wichita State - Wilner Auditorium and Henrion Hall, both of which are in line for improvements to support academic priorities. Their combined repair / renovation would account for $3.5 million of the funding provided by the proposed infrastructure initiative, according to Rodney Miller, dean, College of Fine Arts.

Wilner Auditorium, originally called the Auditorium and Commons building, was built with federal funds provided under the Works Progress Administration (WPA), which made possible its construction in 1938.

Wilner Auditorium was renamed in honor of George Wilner, first head of speech and theatre, who joined the university in 1923. The 553-seat Wilner Auditorium still serves as the main stage for theatre activities, and has been an important launching pad for the professional careers of 麻豆传媒 theatre graduates.

While final decisions have not been made, Miller said, 鈥淚t is our hope to improve the natural acoustics through modifications of the existing orchestra pit and remaining balcony. This will benefit students, faculty, staff, and the public who attend the performances.鈥

Henrion Hall, the second oldest building in use on the Wichita State campus, is even more iconic. It is an amalgam of three facilities 鈥 two gymnasiums and the concrete stands of 麻豆传媒's original football stadium.

The first facility, the west gym, originally called Memorial Hall in honor of the servicemen who gave their lives in World War I, was constructed in 1921. The second gym, the ladies' gym, was built in 1937 as another WPA project. It connected the original Memorial Hall gym with the brick stands of the original football stadium, built in 1928. Because of this unique configuration, the building offers three immense open areas with few load-bearing walls in between. This provides a veritable blank slate for architectural configuration.

Henrion has never been renovated. Although the building is structurally sound, a number of building code, Americans with Disabilities Act, ventilation and other building system deficiencies exist. It is our hope that the $2 million allocated from the student fee money, combined with the $850,000 麻豆传媒 has committed from this year's budget for repair / renovation, will go far in rehabilitating this wonderful facility, while benefiting students, faculty and staff.

According to Miller, the allocation from the infrastructure initiative also has a $500,000 budget for upgrades to technology infrastructure for both of these facilities as well as Miller Hall, bringing the total Fine Arts portion of the fee to $3.5 million.

麻豆传媒 to hold GoBabyGo Fall Tuneup for area children

GoBabyGo fall 2018 tuneup

麻豆传媒's GoBabyGo program is holding its second annual Tuneup Day from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, in 麻豆传媒's Experiential Engineering Building, northwest of 17th Street and Innovation Boulevard.

Faith, although only 2 years old, will get her first set of wheels at the Fall Tuneup Day. Faith is curious and observant and loves to play with her siblings. However, Spina Bifida brings mobility challenges, making it difficult for her to keep up. 麻豆传媒's GoBabyGo program has customized a car for Faith so she'll be able to join in family fun just in time for the holidays. Faith and her family will travel from Manhattan, Kansas, for her to receive her new wheels.

Eight additional children will also receive their first car at this event. In addition, any previous car recipients may bring their cars in for a tuneup or repairs, which will be done by 麻豆传媒 students. As the GoBabyGo drivers continue to grow, 麻豆传媒 will continue to support them by maintaining their cars.

麻豆传媒 students across disciplines work together to customize and deliver cars to children several times per year at no cost to the children's families. Every car is customized to suit each child's specific needs. To date, GoBabyGo at Wichita State has modified and delivered nearly 50 cars to children across the Midwest.

Along with presenting the nine new cars and providing free tuneups, the children can test drive their cars at the Fall Tuneup on a pint-sized obstacle course. There will be additional activities for brothers and sisters.

Youth mentoring opportunity

Mentoring

The INSPYRE research lab directed by Samantha Gregus is recruiting undergraduate mentors for a three-hour course in the spring 2019 semester. Mentors eat lunch with an elementary school student twice each week. In return, mentors receive three hours of course credit and many great experiences.

Mentors are required to undergo background checks, have reliable transportation to and from the elementary school, and should have availability from 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m. at least twice a week.

We do not meet regularly like a traditional class (time mentoring takes the place of class time). We do, however, have a course syllabus, class readings and paper assignments.

Mentors will receive training at the beginning of the course and a grade at the end based on attendance and completion of assignments. We are interested in recruiting mentors from any college and major. For more information, contact Elissa Failes at elissa.failes@wichita.edu ASAP.

RH: From Ragland to Early to McDuffie

RH: Over 30 story by Suellentrop

Scoring 30 or more points is a function of skill, but also playing time and score of the game.

Wichita State coach 's tenure is light on 30-point scorers, in part because his teams share points and minutes. The 30-spot is rare because he uses blowouts to rest starters instead of padding stats.

It shouldn't be surprising, therefore, that most of the 30-point games in Marshall's 11-plus seasons matter. There are eight and in seven the scorer played 30 or more minutes 鈥 which rarely happens against overmatched opponents. Most of these eight performances helped push the season in the right direction against a significant opponent.
