Beyond the Classroom: Anllir Ramirez-Tenorio

Anllir Ramirez-Tenorio is squeezing in a summer internship with Tesla in between his spring and fall internship with Delta TechOps. Anllir said the resources available at Wichita State have prepared him to succeed in his real-world career opportunities.

More than 5,000 Shockers each year take what they’ve learned in the classroom and transfer that knowledge into real-world environments. Applied learning β€” which is required for every Wichita State student β€” happens in offices, factories, laboratories, nonprofits, industries, and companies across the globe. Students work side-by-side with seasoned professionals to ensure that they’re fully prepared to make meaningful contributions to their employers and their communities when they graduate.

What is your job title, the company you work for, and your duties during your applied learning experience?

I had one previous internship at Johnson Controls as a HVAC engineering intern, and I currently have two applied learning experiences:

  • Delta TechOps propulsion engineering co-op in Atlanta, Georgia, where I’m working as a Rolls Royce BR-715 engineering shop co-op. My duties include intake, analyze the level of maintenance for BR-715 jet engines; participate in meetings with the Rolls Royce engineering and Delta engineering teams on the maintenance of the BR-715 jet engine; help the Worscope Engineer with documentation and determination of maintenance needed to be done for the BR-715 jet engine; created an automated process for the engineering team to utilize in future engine intake; and created and communicated Technical Variances for engine repairs.
  • Tesla in Fremont, California working as a manufacturing cell engineering intern. I participate in equipment validation; perform identification, root cause analysis, and resolution of product manufacturing issues; resolve issues and concerns with cross functional teams; and manage small projects from start to finish.

How long do you expect to work in your current position?

I started my co-op with Delta in January, and I started my internship with Tesla May 23.

How did you learn about this opportunity?

I learned about Delta through one of my fraternity brothers in Sigma Lambda Beta, and I learned about Tesla through a SHPE conference.

How is this experience helping you build your resume and prepare you for your career?

My experiences have given me the opportunity to work with engineers, so I have been able to take their advice and experience and apply it to my collegiate career. I have been able to add these experiences to my resume and confidently apply myself to more opportunities with confidence.

How have your classes and experiences at Wichita State prepared you to succeed in this applied-learning opportunity?

My classes have given me a foundation of the skills I need to succeed, as well as a dedicated work ethic, which I can apply to my job role and duties. I believe that because of the resources that ΒιΆΉ΄«Γ½ offers, I’m prepared for my current and future jobs.

What advice would you give other students who are looking for hands-on experiences in their major while they finish college?

Applying yourself outside of classes is very important. Classes are the primary source of education, but being able to be a part of a team or an organization speaks volumes to recruiters. There are many organizations at ΒιΆΉ΄«Γ½ that will allow you to either shine in your degree path or give you opportunities. I am grateful to the organization 3D Printed Prosthetics Group for allowing me to explore a leadership role and come up with creative solutions through my engineering skills. I also like to thank Society of Hispanic Engineers for again allowing me to be in a leadership position. As the vice president last year, I was able to aid students through my experience for their annual career fair. I also led a project with Cloud Elementary School in Wichita that would bring families together in a project rooted in engineering. Lastly, the support of my brothers through Sigma Lambda Beta, as they have supported me in various challenges that I have faced as well as creating long lasting friendships. ΒιΆΉ΄«Γ½ has also offered many projects to help aid in professional skills. Thank you to everyone at the Office of Diversity and Inclusion for providing such great programs.
