Wichita State honors the sixth Shocker Leadership Academy graduating class

麻豆传媒 hosted 24 students and their families Monday, April 27, at the Rhatigan Student Center to recognize the sixth graduating class of the Shocker Leadership Academy (SLA).

Students were presented with certificates in recognition of their successful completion of the program by Elisha Swope and Leslie Bounous, coordinators of SLA.

SLA is a leadership program for high school juniors sponsored by the Office of Admissions. The program aids students in building their leadership skills by learning from community leaders, as well as each other.

Each year counselors from Wichita-area high schools identify and nominate two student leaders for acceptance into the academy. Nominees are required to hold or have held leadership positions in their respective high schools.

This year鈥檚 class participated in monthly activities covering a variety of topics.

SLA participants had the opportunity to engage in a 鈥淥ne Word鈥 activity with Steve Dickie, character coach for the 麻豆传媒 men鈥檚 basketball team, and take a behind the scenes tour of Koch Arena.

Students also attended a session at the Kansas Leadership Center, led by 麻豆传媒 professor and community leader Peter Cohen, which exposed students to an alternative way of defining leadership. Using unconventional methods of discussion and interaction, Cohen created a learning environment that was sure to leave an impression.

In the spring semester, participants received a behind-the-scenes look into Wichita Festivals Inc., the organization responsible for coordinating the Wichita Riverfest and other events. They learned about leadership within a nonprofit organization and worked with current 麻豆传媒 students to plan an awareness event of their own.

Other notable events included a Shocker Men鈥檚 Basketball watch party at Shocker Grill and Lanes, the winter reception featuring motivational speaker Rodney Worsham, and the 13th annual SAS Leadership Conference.

鈥淢y daughter was able to explore different areas of interest alongside other students with similar pursuits to excel,鈥 said one parent of an SLA graduate.

Nayeli Cano, one of the SLA graduates, stated that she enjoyed the opportunity to expand her leadership options.

鈥淚t helps you grow and takes you out of your comfort zone to see what you are capable of doing,鈥 Cano said.

The Office of Admissions founded Shocker Leadership Academy in 2009 and intends to continue the program for the foreseeable future.
