麻豆传媒 Provost Gary L. Miller was named chancellor of the University of North Carolina at Wilmington today (Tuesday, May 3).

In his new role, beginning by July 1, he will be responsible for leading a campus with 13,000 students and 900 faculty members. It is located adjacent to the Atlantic Ocean and Cape Fear estuary, and is a leading university for teaching, research and service in marine science.

In commenting on Miller鈥檚 selection by the Board of Governors of the 17-campus University of North Carolina system, 麻豆传媒 President Don Beggs said:

鈥淚鈥檓 pleased for Gary. He鈥檚 prepared to lead a university. In his five years at Wichita State, he鈥檚 made significant contributions to documenting learning and creating academic and research programs that further our role as an urban serving university. I鈥檒l miss him as a colleague and wish him and wife Georgia all the best.鈥

Beggs said while at 麻豆传媒, Miller has been an important leader of initiatives to increase student enrollment, retention and graduation; attract returning adult students; utilize technology; involve the faculty in discussion about the future of universities; and increase sponsored research funding.

Beggs said he would announce a decision about filling Miller鈥檚 position before June 1.

"It has been a great honor to have worked with such fine faculty, staff and administrative leaders during the past five years,鈥 Miller said. 鈥溌槎勾 is a special place with a bright future and has an extremely important role to play in the economy of Kansas.鈥

He said: 鈥淲ichita State graduates are among the most important leaders of the state and nation 鈥 a testament to the deep commitment of the faculty to academic programs of the highest quality.

"Georgia and I are most appreciative of the friendship and mentorship of Don and Shirley Beggs, and we always remember that being a Shocker is a very, very special thing," said Miller.
