The Lake Afton Public Observatory will be open to visitors from 12:30-3 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 14, for the Geminid Meteor shower. LAPO will show various dark-sky objects through the observatory鈥檚 16-inch telescope, including star clusters, clouds of interstellar gas and a spiral galaxy.
The Geminid Meteor shower occurs annually when the Earth passes through material left behind by an asteroid called 3200 Phaethon. The Geminids should prove to be one of the best meteor showers of the year and will peak just after midnight Dec. 14.
In honor of the meteor 鈥渟hower鈥, anyone who comes to the observatory with some form of appropriate shower attire 鈥 a rain coat, an umbrella, a bar of soap, a towel, etc. 鈥 will receive $1 off admission.
