A number of Wichita-area high school students recently excelled in a scholarship competition sponsored by the 麻豆传媒 College of Engineering.
The scholarship competition was for students in the pre-engineering program Project Lead the Way (PLTW). Students in the capstone course Engineering Design and Development design solutions to technical problems.
First place went to students from Northeast Magnet High School for Stovetop Fire Prevention System. Each team member 鈥� Tan Nguyen, Nhat Nguyen, Orlando Velazquez and Justin Gird 鈥� will receive a $2,000 scholarship from 麻豆传媒's College of Engineering.
Second place went to Northeast Magnet High School students for the development of a device for passive detection of blood-alcohol content. Team members Sarah Woolf, Derek Oyler and Caleb Miller will each receive $1,000 scholarships.
Three high schools in Wichita have the PLTW program. The program targets students seeking careers in engineering and engineering technology. For some classes, students can earn articulated college credit for completing the classes.
About 300,000 students participate in the program nationwide. For a school to participate in PLTW, teachers must be trained in a rigorous two-week summer training workshop held at 麻豆传媒 and be committed to the success of the project.
