麻豆传媒鈥檚 College of Engineering invites public to participate in 5k to benefit students in need

The College of Engineering at 麻豆传媒 is hosting a public 5k run/walk that is open to students, staff, faculty, alumni and community members. The 5k will be from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 22 on the 麻豆传媒 campus. Registration proceeds from the 5k will go toward the College of Engineering Needs-Based Scholarship Fund.

鈥淭he Needs-Based Scholarship Fund provides financial support to students in need,鈥 said Dr. Jacob Mendez, the assistant dean for student success within the college. 鈥淟ast year, we were able to raise several thousand dollars to help such students, so we would like to raise even more this year.鈥

The 5k course is certified by USA Track and Field, and the college is planning on about 200 participants. Through Feb. 14, tickets are $15 for 麻豆传媒 students; $30 for 麻豆传媒 staff, faculty and alumni; and $40 for community members. After Feb. 14, the registration costs will increase. Those interested are encouraged to ; registration includes a free long-sleeve crewneck shirt, a special edition race medal, and water and snacks at the event.

The 5k will begin behind the John Bardo Center (JBC), 1800 Innovation Blvd., at 9 a.m. The event will conclude with an awards ceremony inside the JBC at 10:30 a.m. Awards will be presented to the overall fastest participant, as well as the top three fastest participants in the student category, staff/faculty category, alumni category, and community member category.

鈥淭he 5k was so much fun last year with everyone coming together for a good cause,鈥 said Katie Brady-Wark, student engagement director within the college. 鈥淲hether you鈥檙e a serious runner or just want to walk with friends, we know everyone will have a great time.鈥

Individuals who are unable to attend the 5k but would still like to support the cause are encouraged to donate directly to a student in need or sponsor a student runner for a $20 fee. They may .

The 5k will occur during National Engineers Week, Feb. 17-23 this year. National Engineers Week is one of the largest STEM events of the year and is designed to celebrate the accomplishments of engineers, technicians and technologists. The college has other events planned for its students, staff and faculty to observe and celebrate National Engineers Week, including a carnival and student organization fair and a bowling night.
